First-Aid: Spotting the Signs of a Stroke

first-aid-spotting-the-signs-of-a-stroke

A stroke occurs when the blood flow gets blocked by bursts or clots, depriving the brain of the oxygen it needs. As a result, the brain cells in the affected area die. In the United States, a stroke attack is the number one cause of physical disability. This is why a first-aid class is needed to identify the signs of a stroke and provide immediate intervention.

In our life support training in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Comfi-Kare CPR teaches how to spot the warning signs of a stroke attack using the F.A.S.T.E.R method:

  • Face

Ask the patient to smile and see if the other side of the face droops.

  • Arms

Tell the person to raise both arms for ten seconds. If the other hand falls, it might be a stroke.

  • Stability

A stroke can affect a person’s feet’s stability or steadiness, making them fall, lose coordination, or be unable to stand.

  • Talking

Say a short sentence and ask the person to repeat it. Some signs of a stroke include slurred speech, garbling, or non-sensical responses.

  • Eyes

Ask the person if they experience a sudden partial or complete loss of vision in one or both eyes.

  • React

React immediately by calling 9-1-1 even if the symptoms go away.

Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke can be achieved even without formal training. But responding to such a situation calls for basic life support training and the like.
